Ahmedabad, Mar 04: Ten criminals escaped from Borsad Sub-Jail in Anand district last night after overpowering their guards, police said. There were two barracks in the jail, one housing eight prisoners and the other housing two, the police control room said. Some of the prisoners feigned illness last night and called in the two guards, deployed at the jail, for help.
Responding to the plea, the two guards went inside the barracks where they were collectively attacked by the prisoners, who then decamped with their weapons. The two guards, identified as Natubhai Mavabhai and Poonambhai Shankarbhai were reported to be severely injured and have been hospitalised in Karamsad town.
A red alert has been issued and efforts are being made to recapture the prisoners, all of which have been described by the police as ``petty criminals,`` and do not include any hardcore criminal.
