New Delhi: Krishna lovers across the globe are celebrating the holy festival of Janmashtami today. This day marks the birth of Hindu deity, Lord Krishna. Janmashtami falls on the eighth day of Shravana's Krishna Paksha in the Hindu calendar.

The festival is celebrated in different manners all over the world. In Maharashtra, the most famous ritual of this day is Dahi Handi. It highlights god's naughty shades. 


Some people also begin the celebrations at midnight, when the lord was born.

Fasting details:


Krishna followers observe a day-long fast on Janmashtami. Here, they can only consume a single meal. The fast can be broken next day after Rohini Nakshatra and Ashtami Tithi gets over. Some only consume milk and fruits during the day and break their fast at midnight after praying to the lord. 


Prerequisites for Janmashtami Puja:


New clothes for Lord Krishna, Bansuri (flute), ornaments for lord, Shankha – conch shell, pooja thali which consist pooja ingredients, ghata – bell, Diya – earthen pot, Chawal – rice, Elaichi – Cardamom, Supari – betel nut, Paan Patta – betel leaves, Mauli thread, Gangajal – sacred water, Sindoor – Vermillion paste, Agarbatti – incense sticks, flowers, ghee and sweets.
