New Delhi, July 30: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines, has netted the biggest gain for a foreign film in India this year. Three days after opening last Friday, it grossed around $1 million (Rs 4.7 crore), according to Columbia TriStar officials. T3’s revenue surpassed earnings of movies like Matrix Reloaded, Charlie’s Angels Full Throttle, Chicago, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Lord of the Rings: Twin Towers Catch Me If You Can and Maid In Manhattan. Each movie, except Charlie’s Angels and Harry Potter, grossed on an average Rs 2-3 crore.
Charlie’s Angels, which was launched with 180 prints, grossed about Rs 5 crore. Also, Harry Potter with 100 prints, earned around Rs 5 crore. T3’s earning came from over 207 prints. The rest of the films’ revenue came from half-a-dozen prints. ‘‘We were able to optimise the film’s strong franchise and Arnold’s brand equity,’’ said Uday Singh, MD of Columbia TriStar Films of India. ‘‘T3 is our second biggest hit after Spiderman.’’
‘‘The shelf life of the movies are dropping drastically. The success of T3 needs to be watched closely,’’ said Tushar Dhingra, V-P, PVR Cinema. However, rivals questioned the box office figures released by Columbia TriStar, claiming that there was no transparency. In the US, T3 has grossed $137.4 million after four weeks of release. T3 was made at a cost of $180 million. In India, T3 was released on 228 screens and the film was dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Of the $1 million earnings, the regional dubbing amounted to around 50 per cent, while the rest came from the English version.
Company officials said the marketing campaign tried to create a mass appeal for the Terminator brand, as this third version came after 10 years. Schwarzenegger’s last three movies Sixth Day, End of Days and Collateral Damage did not do well in India.
