Srinagar, Nov 11: The Srinagar-Leh National Highway, the only surface link between frontier region of Ladakh and Kashmir valley, would be closed for vehicular traffic from
today, an official spokesman said yesterday.
Snowfall in Sonamarg-Kargil sector necessitated the early closure of the 434-km-long highway, he said.
The highway remains closed for vehicular traffic for six to seven months a year due to heavy snowfall on the road especially at 11,578 feet high Zojila Pass which forces closure of the road from middle of November every year.
The army and beacon authorities have already withdrawn their resources from Srinagar-Kargil sector of the highway, the spokesman said.
Besides Srinagar-Leh National Highway, snowfall also snapped road links to several border villages including Gurez in north Kashmir districts of Kupwara and Baramulla, he said.
Meanwhile, authorities have already stored a large quantity of essential commodities in the snapped areas to overcome shortage during the winter months, he said.
