Argentine President Fernando De La Rua has declared a state of emergency in response to mounting public unrest that has left at least one dead, a government source told a news agency.
The source, who asked not to be named as the decree signed by De La Rua had not yet been released, confirmed an earlier press report about the measure, which was to be presented to parliament later on Wednesday for its approval.
Earlier, De La Rua convened an emergency ministerial meeting to consider the measure in the wake of widespread looting and protests across the country after several Opposition lawmakers urged the government to debate the declaration.
