Amritsar, Aug 15: In a unique independence day gesture, the Indian Airlines today conducted a free trip for a group of freedom fighters and physically challenged children to Jalianwala Bagh to pay tributes to the martyrs.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Rajiv Pratap Rudy accompanied the group on this special New Delhi- Amritsar flight to commemorate India's independence and 50 years of flying by Indian Airlines.
The minister mingled freely with the members of the group and personally greeted them. "This is a small token of our respect to the freedom fighters, whose sacrifices brought independence to us," Rudy said.
Adding glamour and making the children happy were Bollywood stars Amrish Puri and Jeetendra, who posed for photographs with the group. The children enjoyed every moment of their company with the film stars. It was a first flying experience for almost all of them.
The group paid rich tributes at the historic Martyr's Memorial at Jalianwala Bagh and later visited the Golden Temple.
Simultaneously, another group of freedom fighters and physically challenged children was accompanied from Chennai to Port Blair, by the Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology, Thirunavukkarasar, where they paid homage to freedom fighters, who served long-terms in the cellular jail.
