Srinagar, June 13: Ruling People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti today asked Jammu and Kashmir government to bring a legislation in the assembly to ensure a five per cent reservation in government jobs for educated unemployed girls from families living Below Poverty Line. Participating in the debate on demands for grants for labour, employment and science and technology, she stressed on the need for reforms in recruitment process to ensure jobs for at least one person from each family who belong to economically weaker sections of the society.

Such youth should be given priority in government jobs as also in bank loans for self-employment ventures. She said.

She also sought relaxation in the existing criteria for appointments and abolishing of viva system in interview to eliminate "favouritism and corruption" in recruitment.

Pleading the cause of labour class, Mufti said welfare of this vital section of society needs to be given priority besides safeguarding their interests.

She advocated opening of recruitment cells at Srinagar and Jammu so that local youth need not go to Chandigarh for interviews for various Central government jobs.

She said virtually no recruitment in Central government departments has taken place in the state since 1990 and urged the Centre to clear the backlog in addition to filling up of one lakh jobs as promised by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his recent visit to the state.

Describing unemployment as a burning problem all over the country, former finance minister and MLA Abdul Rahim called for human resource development and a perspective manpower utilisation planning to tackle this problem.
