Karachi, Aug 30: Pakistani customs officials seized six metric tons of hashish bound for the Netherlands, a provincial minister said.
Acting on a tip-off, customs officials stopped a truck and found the hashish in it yesterday at Naushera Feroze, 400 km east of the port city of Karachi, said Mahmood Sadiquie, the provincial minister for excise and taxation. The driver was arrested.
Sadiquie said the truck was en route to Karachi from Rawalpindi, a city near Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, and that the drugs were to be shipped to the Netherlands. Authorities are now looking for the owner of the drugs, he said.
Pakistani police, customs officials and military-backed narcotics forces have made several drug seizures in recent months, particularly in areas bordering Afghanistan. On August 10, customs officials seized 3,400 kg of hashish packed in plastic bags and hidden under logs in a truck in northern Pakistan.
Officials believe that most of the narcotics seized in Pakistan are produced in Afghanistan. Bureau Report
