New Delhi, Nov 06: Internet networking company Sun Microsystem is set to launch Java desktop systems in India early next year, a senior company official said today. "We have already launched the Java desktop systems in San Francisco in US a month ago. The product will start shipping in another couple of months to all over the world. I hope that by early next year, we will have some Indian manufacturers who will be offering the Java desktop systems as an alternative," Jay Puri, vice president, Asia Pacific, Sun Microsystems said on the sidelines of a CII seminar.
It will be sold through the PC manufacturers as an alternative to the Microsoft environment or other operating systems, he said, adding that while the desktop would ultimately be for everybody, to begin with, we will be going after the enterprise market.
Java desktop system is an open source based environment. It has the same functionality as the Microsoft environment except that it is open source and is much cheaper, he said.
It depends on the PC manufacturers to decide on when exactly it will be available.
Business in India has been outstanding, Puri said. Bureau Report
