On Friday, Jenner's lawyers appeared in court, and a Los Angeles judge approved the request. Jenner was not present in the courtroom, based on a live stream of the proceedings.

According to court documents, Jenner formally requested to be called "Caitlyn Marie Jenner" instead of "William Bruce Jenner" in the name and gender petition. The filing states Jenner also requested that information necessary for the process, such as her medical history, be sealed.

Jenner said although public support for her transition has been positive, she has received "unwelcome negative attention from private citizens," and her motion to file portions of the petition under seal was granted.
