Thai Airways International PCL will cut by half the number of weekly flights on its Bangkok-Los Angeles sector, chop one flight to New Delhi, and fly more days to Dubai and Osaka.
The national flag carrier said in a statement received Tuesday that the changes, approved during an executive management meeting Monday, are aimed at cushioning the effects of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the US. It said the terrorist events led to a sharp fall in confirmed passenger bookings on the Bangkok-Los Angeles route, making it necessary to reduce the number of weekly flights from six to three beginning Jan. 16. The airline earlier used to fly daily to Los Angeles and back but had reduced the frequency to six-a-week Nov. 21.
The statement said the Bangkok-Dubai route will be operated four times a week starting Dec. 16 instead of three at present, due to increased passenger traffic. The Bangkok-Osaka frequency will be increased from four flights per week to seven from Jan. 16. On the Bangkok-New Delhi sector, the airline will operate six flights a week instead of seven a week, using Boeing 777-200/300 aircraft instead of Airbus A330-300, the statement said.
Although both aircraft have the same passenger capacity, the Boeing is capable of carrying more cargo, "which will increase profitability while decreasing expenses," it said. No date for the change was given.
