Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina on Saturday accused the Bangladesh government of terrorising opponents through arrests, intimidation and false charges of corruption, and warned the strategy could backfire. Speaking to over 15,000 supporters at a rally organised by her Awami League in the capital, Dhaka, Hasina called on Bangladeshis to resist attempts to sideline the party.

Political analysts said Hasina and Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, were unlikely soon to resolve years of bitter feuding, stifling prospects for progress and economic development.

Both parties regularly call nationwide strikes, which cripple business and industry and cost millions in lost production.
Khaleda, who defeated Hasina in an election last year, has promised to expose all misdeeds by previous administrations, but the Awami League has said this is just an excuse for a witch hunt.

Hasina said the government was enacting laws merely to seek vengeance against political opponents, and warned that it could backfire.
