Dehra Dun, Oct 02: A state-wide bandh is being observed in Uttaranchal today to coincide with the 1994 Muzaffarnagar carnage. The call of the bandh has been given by Uttarkhand Sanyukt Sangharsh Morcha (USSM), an umbrella organisation of 20 political and social parties, against the acquittal of Anant Kumar Singh, the then District Magistrate of Muzaffarnagar on whose orders several agitationists participating in the Uttarakhand statehood movement were allegedly killed in firing by police.
The bandh has received support from top congress leaders with industrial development minister Kishor Upadhyay and party general secretary Dhirendra Pratap, Kamala Pant, the convenor of the USSM, told reporters.
Though Nainital High Court recalled its own order to acquit Singh recently, pant said the bandh has been convened so that all those persons responsible for the carnage do not go unpunished. Bureau Report
