Mumbai, Feb 25: In a major crackdown, the Mumbai Police conducted raids on over 40 nightclubs and bars last night and detained over 1000 bar girls, employees and customers. The raids, which were conducted at prominent places in north, central and southern Mumbai, continued throughout the night and was aimed at cracking down on flesh trade, obscenity that had flourished in these nightclubs, police said.
These bars were also found violating government norms by operating beyond the stipulated time period, they added.
The operation carried out by all Additional Police Commissioners and assisted by respective DCPs, was personally supervised by newly-appointed Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy who is reported to have conducted some of the raids, police said.
Over 1000 people detained following the raids are likley to be arrested and produced in various Metropolitan courts in the city during the day, sources said, adding Mumbai police is also likely to initiate disciplinary action against the police officers in who jurisdiction these bars operated.
