Ramallah, June 09: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
has appointed a new head of preventive security in the West
Bank, a senior Palestinian security source said today.
Ziad Habrih from the northern West Bank city of Jenin
will replace Zuhair Manasra, the source told a news agency on condition
of anonymity.
Habrih is close to former chief Jibril Rajoub whom Arafat
sacked last year, and his appointment was made in consultation
with the security chief in Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas'
government, Mohammed Dahlan, the source added.
The preventive security services will make up the bulk of
the apparatus the Palestinian authority is trying to rebuild
in a bid to re-establish its grip on security and crack down
on radical anti-Israeli militants.
