Dehra Dun, May 14: Nearly a year after the main lobby of the Uttaranchal Assembly building was gutted, its boundary wall collapsed last evening under the impact of a high velocity squall raising fresh doubts over safety of the newly constructed structure. The western boundary wall of Vidhan Sabha could not withstand the squall and collapsed. Besides, a door and many windows also broke, officials said today.

Terming the building as "totally unsafe" assembly Speaker Yashpal Arya stuck to his demand that the assembly be shifted elsewhere. "I directed the government to shift the Vidhan Sabha to a new premises in June last year when a major fire broke out in the lobby", he said and expressed unhappiness over non-compliance with his directive.

Expressing doubts over the safety of the building, the speaker apprehended "some big accidents can also occur".

Arya last year had set up a high-level committee to probe the fire and search for a new place for the assembly.

The committee stopped work when some political parties pressurised the government to solve the issue of permanent capital first before undertaking any new construction activity in Dehra Dun.

Meanwhile, BJP today reiterated that the issue of permanent capital of Uttaranchal be resolved first before undertaking any major construction activities on Vidhan Sabha building which was built when it was in power in 2000-01.
