New Delhi, Dec 21: Andhra Pradesh today demanded immediate assistance to drought-hit states while asking Centre
to speed up disinvestment process and reforms in financial, legal, labour and administrative areas to attain the targeted
8.0 per cent annual growth during 2002-07.
Addressing the National Development Council meeting, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu also warned Centre about the impact of globalisation and WTO free-trade regime on Indian economy, saying that it has to be taken note of while formulating the tenth five year plan. He requested Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to appreciate the gravity of drought situation and provide immediate assistance to the affected states.
Naidu said that all the states should commit themselves to achieve the overall objective and the 8.0 per cent growth target of the tenth plan, while accelerating the pace of reforms jointly with a strong political consensus.
"Reforms are no longer a matter of choice but have become a matter of necessity. Reforms agenda should be drawn up jointly by the Centre and states together based on broad consensus, which will include financial, legal, labour and administrative reforms," he said.
Naidu said that the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments need to be further pushed towards greater decentralisation and empowerment of the people and their institutions.
"We need to impart greater vigour to our efforts for disinvesting in the public sector. A national consensus needs to be built in favour of disinvestment. Areas of open sky policy and private participation in tourism needs to be further examined and promoted," he said.
