Dubai, June 26: Taking strong exception to British Prime Minister Tony Blair's remarks expressing support for student demonstrations here, Iran summoned the English ambassador and lodged a protest against "interference in its internal affairs". "Blair's statement in the House of Commons that the student demonstrations in Iran deserved British support ran contrary to the principle of respect for national sovereignty of the nations as well as London's desire to strengthen relations with Iran," Deputy Foreign Minister for Euro-American Affairs Ali Ahani was quoted as saying by the official Iranian news agency.
Ahani said Tehran had lodged a protest with British ambassador Richard John Dalton and sought explanation on Blair's remarks. Dalton said British officials were determined to proceed with their past policy towards the Islamic Republic of Iran which focuses on developing relations with Tehran.
He said that he would convey Iran's protest to London. The mounting student protests in Iran against the Islamic regime has embarrassed the clergy dominated government while the US and UK have openly backed the students. Bureau Report
