The first Pushtun uprising is now reported from Afghanistan.
A prominent Afghan tribal leader, Hamid Karzai, an influential figure from the leading ethnic Pushtun tribe who is close to former King Mohammed Zahir Shah, has moved into Afghanistan and survived a Taliban attack on a meeting of tribal elders he convened in Uruzgan province, killing 12 Taliban soldiers in the skirmish, The Washington Post reports.
Although any rebellion led by Karzai would seem to be in its infancy, said the Post, its onset would be welcomed by US officials who have been eager for the Taliban to come under attack in the Pushtun heart land, where the hardline Taliban is the strongest. Bureau Report
