A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted southern Japan early on Sunday, the meteorological agency said. There was no immediate report of casualties or damage. No tidal wave warning was issued. The focus of the quake was located 10 km under the seabed off Amami-Oshima, some 1,300 km south of Tokyo, the agency said.
"It was a strong quake. But we have not received any reports of casualities or damage. Only one household claimed several dishes were broken due to the quake," an official in Amai-Oshia said.
The tremor follows two moderate quakes on Saturday, which also resulted in no damage.
