CPI today demanded that accumulated stocks of foodgrains be distributed among people instead of being exported to subsidise foreign beneficiaries.
“ Rather than use the stock of foodgrains (nearly 50 million tonnes) lying idle in FCI godowns to feed the poor who have suffered from floods, droughts and quakes, government has planned to export about five million tonnes far below the procurement price plus the transporting, handling and storage costs,” the CPI central secretariat said in a statement in New Delhi.
Demanding that the stocks, which have to give way for new procurement soon, be distributed among people through the food for work And other such schemes, it said government is in practice subsidising the foreign beneficiaries by a huge sum, while refusing to do so for our own people.
