Chennai, Feb 17: Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Mrutyunjay Sarangi said the final list of voters will be published on February 25 as scheduled and electronic voting machines (EVMs) would be used for the first time in the state in all the constituencies for which about 52,000 machines are ready. Talking to newspersons after discussing poll arrangements with the returning officers of all the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state, Sarangi said the state election department had recommended the holding of by-election to the Mangalore Assembly constituency along with the Lok Sabha elections. The seat fell vacant following the resignation of Dalit Panthers of India general secretary Thol Thirumavalavan. On poll expenditure, he pointed out that the Election Commission (EC) had raised the ceiling from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for the Lok Sabha elections. The transport cost of 20 leaders of registered political parties and 40 leaders of recognised parties would not be included in their expenditure account, he said, adding that the political parties had been asked to submit their lists in this regard. Asked whether the number of polling stations would be reduced, Sarangi said a detailed report had been sent to the EC after taking views of political leaders in each district. Meanwhile, EC consultant K J Rao, who verified the electoral rolls in some constituencies in districts of Theni, Madurai and Dindigul in the last two days following complaints of irregularities, said no malpractices or irregularities were found in the voters' list. ''The authorities have failed to delete the names of people who have shifted their residence. I have instructed the district collectors to delete those names after issuing notices,'' he added. The EC had ordered for house-to-house verification in the three constituencies following reports that the number of electorate was on the higher side in proportion to the population. Bureau Report
