Tezpur, Jan 30: Brindabon Goswami retained the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) presidentship today, defeating former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta by a huge margin in the party elections. The political drama which stretched from yesterday afternoon to this morning saw secret vote being used for the first time as both Mahanta and Goswami were determined to stand for elections.
Goswami got 266 votes against Mahanta 169 out of a total 439 votes.
Mahanta quit as party president after AGP suffered a complete whitewash at the hands of the Congress in the last assembly election.
Goswami thanked partymen and called for unity in the cadres.
