Washington, Mar 03: Nasa scientists announced yesterday that parts of Mars were once "drenched with water" - so much so that life could easily have existed there. Nasa says it now has clear evidence water once flowed or pooled on the surface of Mars. The conclusion was reached after a mission of a robot explorer called Opportunity which landed near Mars`s equator late last month. It studied finely layered bedrock in the wall of a crater and scientists discovered a grey mineral which on Earth is formed in water. Importantly, the discovery suggests life could have evolved on the Red Planet just as it did on Earth.

It also means NASA can go ahead with a plan to eventually send people to Mars.
