Mumbai, Feb 07: An Indian Navy warship, the INS Agray, suffered serious damage to its hull during a mock naval warfare exercise in the Arabian Sea on Thursday night. Defence spokesperson Major C.K. Singh said that there was an explosion during an anti-submarine firing exercise.
Commander Abhay Lambhate said, "All the officials have been safely rescued from the ship and it has been safely towed back to harbour." However, a defence spokesperson refused to reveal the nature of the blast or the exact location of the ship when the incident occurred.
The INS Agray is part of the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare squadron. The accident resulted in the flooding of the ship’s engine room.
The spokesperson said Navy ships and aircraft in the area have been deployed to assist the INS Agray. A board of inquiry has been constituted to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident.

Indian Navy ships have been conducting a major exercise in the Arabian Sea for the past three days and the INS Agray, whose date of commissioning has not been disclosed, was participating in the annual exercise when the accident occurred.

An Internet search threw up the vessel type as a 1241PE ASW Corvette. The website www.bharat-rakshak.com said the ship, with a full-load displacement of 485 tonnes and a maximum speed of 28 knots, has a range of 2,400 miles at 14 knots.
