Chennai, July 28: The Madras High Court today rejected the bail application of M K Azhagiri, elder son of DMK President M Karunanidhi, who had been arrested in connection with the murder of senior party leader T Kiruttinan at Madurai in May last. Justice V Kanagaraj, who reserved the orders on the bail application on July 22 last, said in his order that since the investigation into the murder was not yet over and two key accused in the case were still at large, the bail application of Azhagiri could not be accepted. In his bail application, Azhagiri, who was arrested on May 21, a day after Kiruttinan's murder in Madurai, alleged that he had been "falsely implicated in the murder case for political reasons." He alleged that other accused were coerced by police to give false statements implicating him in the murder case. The statements were retracted by the accused before a Madurai court, he added.

Azhagiri had been charged by the police with hatching a conspiracy to murder Kiruttinan following Intra-party feud during the DMK's organisational elections.
