Moscow, Oct 06: Chechnya's Kremlin-appointed interim head Ahmad Haji Kadyrov Gudermesi, a prominent ex-jehadi, has swept yesterday's presidential poll in the war-torn Caucasian province of the Russian Federation by bagging over 80 per cent votes, preliminary results indicated today. According to the Russian media reports, at yesterday's polls, turnout was 81.4 per cent in spite of terrorist threats and stringent security steps were taken to prevent any single terror attack. Heavy turnout at Chechnya polls is seen as a personal victory for President Vladimir Putin, who rose to power in the backdrop of Chechnya War, when weakened Boris Yeltsin stepped down in December 1999. Kadyrov, 54, was Moscow's fierce enemy during the first Chechnya War in 1992-96 and as chief mufti of the separatist regime had galvanised the Chechens in fighting the Federal Army by declaring a jehad against Kremlin.
