Colombo, Nov 19: Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga's party today vowed to introduce a vote of no
confidence against Parliament's Speaker who questioned her
authority to prorogue the house.
People's Alliance (PA) will move a vote of no
confidence against Speaker Joseph Michael Perera who ruled
that the president's action two weeks ago to suspend
parliament was simply aimed at "paralysing" the legislature
and any future attempt would be resisted, PA legislator Nimal
Siripala de Silva said.
Kumaratunga's People's Alliance is the main opposition party and together with the Marxist JVP, or People's Liberation Front, opposes the land-mark ruling by the Speaker who is a member of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's party.
However, the combined opposition lacks the required simple majority to oust the Speaker.
