Midnapore, July 06: A local court today remanded three persons, including a teacher of Calcutta University, to police custody till July 10 for alleged links with the Peoples War Group.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Tarifuddin, West Midnapore directed the police to submit a medical report tomorrow on the condition of Prof Kaushik Ganguly who showed the judge wounds on his left hand and foot complaining that he had been tortured by the police. Prof Ganguly and the two others were arrested yesterday from the outskirts of Kolkata.
He and the two others Tinku Ghosh and Parashar Bhattacharjee were remanded to five days police custody. Earlier praying for their police custody additional public prosecutor Raicharan Ghosh said the police had specific proof that the trio were directly involved in acts of treason. Appearing on behalf of the defence, convenor of the People's Union of Civil Liberties Arun Kumar Majhi alleged that police had tortured Ganguly after arresting him.
"Police cannot torture a teacher of a prestigious institution in this manner," he submitted.
Majhi later told newspersons that he would move the district sessions court next week.
The West Bengal Human Rights Commission would also be moved, he said and demanded a judicial probe into the episode.
