Washington, Feb 26: The US House International Relations Committee has passed a resolution congratulating India for its democratic system of governance. The resolution, which was introduced by 32 members of the House of Representatives, received support from large number of members. The resolution said the people of India and the United States had a common bond of shared values and a strong commitment to democratic principles.
Congratulating India, Republican member of the committee and Congressman Ed Royce, "I think it is proper for the committee to recognise positive developments - in this case, the vibrant democracy that is India."
Drawing links between the American and Indian constitutions, Royce said "The framers of India's Constitution were greatly influenced by our Founding Fathers, and many of the same freedoms enshrined in our Constitution are in India's Constitution".
"Today, India is the world's largest democracy. That is an impressive distinction. It's growth as a world power is creating the chance for peace and stability in South Asia," the Congressman said in a statement.
He said that last month, the committee met with India's Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha to discuss the growing bilateral relationship in the areas of space and science.
"This resolution signals Congress' interest in furthering this important relationship," Royce added. Bureau Report
