Condemning the police attack on mediapersons at Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat, Congress reiterated its demand for the resignation of chief minister Narendra Modi. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party ruled out a change of leadership in Gujarat, asserting that the chief minister was doing his best. The Congress condemned the defilement of the Sabarmati Ashram by the BJP youth wing activists as ``sad and shameful`` and said this was indicative of the fact that the BJP and the sangh parivar were opposed to the freedom of expression.
Referring to the transfer of an additional commissioner of police following the Sabarmati Ashram incident, Congress said that this phenomenon was being witnessed since the last six weeks in riot-torn Gujarat, where officials having a sense of duty and trying to uphold the law of the land were being singled out for harassment or given an insignificant posting.
On the contrary, those guilty of not registering FIRs against VHP and Bajrang Dal leaders who lead the miscreants responsible for the carnage were being rewarded. Meanwhile, the BJP feels Modi acted `` effectively and swiftly`` to bring the situation under control, BJP spokesman Sunil Shastri said. He said the BJP stands by chief minister Modi.
Shastri`s attention was drawn to the demand by some National Democratic Alliance partners, particularly Trinamool Congress and Samata Party, that the chief minister should be changed as he failed to restore normalcy in the state where violence had been continuing for more than a month. “The proper place for the NDA partners to raise such a demand would be a meeting of the NDA. I think that is the right forum which is attended by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Home minister L K Advani and party president K Jana Krishnamurthi.” These parties can make their point there, he said.
Asked about the assault on mediapersons at Sabarmati Ashram, he said the party outrightly condemned the incident and felt that the culprits should be brought to book and punished. “The state government had already ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident”, he said.
