IOC President questions Beckham`s role as ambassador
London, June 30: The use of Real Madrid and England star David Beckham as an ambassador for London`s 2012 Olympic bid has been questioned by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge.
London, June 30: The use of Real Madrid and England star David Beckham as an ambassador for London's 2012 Olympic bid has been questioned by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge.
Rogge believes any role for Beckham may do more harm to the bid because he will take no part in the Olympics. A Great Britain football team does not exist and Rogge feels that any role for the football superstar simply makes no sense.
Beckham, whose recent move to Spanish giants Real has been followed by a promotional tour in South-East Asia, has been invited by London bid chairwoman Barbara Cassani to help the campaign for 2012.
But IOC chief Rogge told the Sunday Times: "I've nothing against Beckham but what is the consistency of sending a soccer player to support the bid who you know is not going to compete in the Olympic Games?"
