New Delhi, Mar 10: The three petitioners, who had challenged the government`s decision reducing the annual fee in the six business schools of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), today filed an application in the Supreme Court for modification of its order, approving the government action.
The petitioners in the application filed in the registry said that the court should obtain an undertaking from the government that it would not interfere in the autonomy of the IIMs.
The petitioners pointed out that in its order of February 27, the court while disposing of their PIL on the fee issue, had recorded that ``The Union of India stated that the directions issued by the Central government for reduction of fee shall not be construed as interference in the autonomy and appropriate funds would also be provided to those institutions.``
They said this was stated in the order following a statement made by Additional Solicitor General Mukul Rohtagi while it would have been appropriate that the government had assured in an undertaking before the court that it had no intention and would not interfere with the IIMs` autonomy.
The application is likely to be taken up for consideration on Friday.
During the hearing of the PIL, earlier, the court made it clear that admissions to such institutions should not be the monopoly only of the elite class.
