Jammu, Jan 14: Hailed as the moonland of world, Ladakh has received a record number of over 28,000 tourists, 15 thousand of them foreigners in year 2003, chief executive councilor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Thupstan Chewwang today said.
"We have received a record number of 28,393 tourists, including 15,362 foreigners and 13,031 domestic tourists in Ladakh in the year 2003," Chewwang said.
The number of tourists increased by a record 24,000 compared to the figures in the previous year, he said.
Ladakh broke the record of 1998's figures of 25,000 tourists in 2003, Chewwang said.
"We can attract huge number of tourists, mostly foreigners to this world's highest highland, but the problem is lack of infrastructure in Ladakh," he said stressing that development of infrastructure is being given top priority this year.
Besides, traditional Ladakhi food, lifestyle, dresses, heritage, medical treatments will be promoted in a big way to attract more tourists, he said adding thrust would also be on protection of environment. Bureau Report
