Srinagar, Aug 20: Dismissing the call for dissolution of Hurriyat Conference's executive committee, chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari today warned general council members to fall "in line" or face punitive action for breach of discipline. "The executive will discuss yesterday's meeting, where reportedly many general council members were present, to see whether there was a need for punitive action against the erring members," said Ansari.
The Hurriyat chairman, however, said expansion of the seven-member executive could be considered but the members will have to abide by the discipline of the amalgam instead of creating "scenes in public".
Asked if ouster was among the possible actions that could be taken, Ansari said, "It can be as it has happened in the past ... Depends on what the executive decides." He said a constituent of the Hurriyat Conference, Kashmir Liberation Council (KLC), was ousted from the amalgam during the tenure of fire-brand Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for conducting similar activities.
Without naming Geelani, the Hurriyat chairman said, "The person who was prominent in ouster of KLC from Hurriyat for breach of discipline is indulging in similar activities".
Asked if the latest development within the Hurriyat can lead to a split in the 25-party conglomerate, he firmly replied in the negative. Ansari alleged that Geelani was the "brain" behind yesterday's meeting, held at Budgam residence of Anjuman-e-Shar'ie-Shian president Aga Syed Abdul Hassan, to "weaken" the Hurriyat Conference as his earlier attempt to do so by "implicating" People's Conference had failed.
"This man is taking a high moral ground and goes around throwing mud at us. What about his association with Anjuman, whose youth president is a National Conference MLA? What does his conscience tell him now?" Ansari asked.
"Hurriyat Conference cannot be split by such things. Ultimately, everyone (separatists) has to come under its fold," Ansari said, adding the amalgam had weathered enough storms to see through this one safely too.
He denied the Hurriyat constitution provided for election of executive committee by the general council every two years.
"There is only provision for election of the chairman every two years. The executive wanted to amend the constitution and reduce the chairman's term to one year, but decided otherwise as the time duration was not enough for them to implement their programmes," he added. Bureau Report
