Moscow, Aug 03: An Mi-24 military helicopter crashed in the rugged Itum-Kale district of Chechnya, but no one was injured, said news agency reports. The helicopter crashed yesterday afternoon near the village of Konzhukhoi, said a report citing defense sources.
Mi-24 helicopter was accompanying an Mi-8 transport helicopter when it crashed in the mountainous region, located near the border with Georgia. It said the cause was a mechanical problem. The crew was safely evacuated, the news agencies said. The reports could not immediately be confirmed.
Russian forces in Chechnya have suffered many helicopter crashes, some caused by rebel attacks and others by technical flaws since the current war began in fall 1999. Bureau Report
