Sonia will be PM only if party wins majority: Cong
New Delhi, May 10: Confident of forming a secular government headed by it, Congress today said Sonia Gandhi will be the Prime Minister if the party gets majority on its own.
New Delhi, May 10: Confident of forming a secular government headed by it, Congress today said Sonia Gandhi will be the Prime Minister if the party gets majority on its own.
"We are confident that there will be a non-NDA secular government led by Congress Party. In case Congress gets majority on its own, Sonia will be the Prime Minister.
Otherwise coalition partners will meet to decide on the issue of leadership of the secular front, party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters at the end of the fourth and final phase of Lok Sabha elections.
Asked what would be the status of allies if Congress gets the majority and form its own government, he said that "allies are allies. They would remain with us through thick and thin". He did not elaborate.
About possibility of congress supporting some other party or leader to form a secular government in the event of hung parliament, Singhvi said, "it is hypothetical and speculative.”
On the suggestion that Sonia may not be the leader of the secular front, Singhvi said, "We are not attempting to answer hypothetical questions.”
He also condemned the "illegal" distribution of sarees by Union Minister and BJP candidate from Sadar Lok Sabha seat Vijay Goel and said this showed how desperate the NDA candidates were to win the polls.
Singhvi also alleged large scale rigging and booth capturing in Kairana Lok Sabha seat in UP saying that there was complete "lawlessness" in Shamli town of the constituency. "The focus of the new government would be on employment generation and agricultural sector," he said.
