Shillong, Nov 14: An estimated 1300 people have taken shelter in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills district because of 'tension' in a 'disputed area' along Meghalaya-Assam border. The tension was sparked a week back at Block I and Block II areas in adjoining Karbi Anglong district of Assam afer alleged harassment of Khasi-Pnar people staying there by two militant groups UPDS and KNV.

Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills district Deputy Commissioner L Kharkongor, when contacted, admitted 'tension' in the area.

Out of these, 500 people were staying in camps and the rest were putting up with their relatives in several villages, she said.

Meghalaya home minister Robert G Lyngdoh also talked to his Assam counterpart urging him to take immediate steps in this regard.

Meanwhile, as a retaliatory move, the formidable Khasi Students Union yesterday issued 'quit notices' to all Karbi people staying in four districts of Meghalaya. Bureau Report
