New Delhi, Feb 15: Growing motorcycle sales and a resurgent scooter market drove domestic two-wheeler sales up by 8.9 per cent during the first 10 months of this fiscal.
A total of 44.26 lakh two-wheelers were sold during April-January 2003-04 over 40.62 lakh units a year ago, data compiled by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed.
Sale of motorcycles and step-thrus went up 12.4 per cent to 34.3 lakh units (30.5 lakh units a year earlier), helped by rising demand for 100-150cc motorcycles.
Scooters and scooterettees posted a modest 2.5 per cent rise to 7.34 lakh units (7.16 lakh units) but that of mopeds fell 11.5 per cent to 2.55 lakh units (2.88 lakh units).
The scooter and scooterettee segment has been witnessing a revival from the early part of this fiscal, thanks largely to surging sale of automatic scooters made by Honda.
Demand for two-wheelers in the world's second-biggest market, after China, had slowed down since January-March 2003 due to last year's drought and lack of clarity on the implementation of uniform or Value-Added Tax (VAT) system.
Sales have, however, started picking up from the second quarter of this fiscal, which is likely to go up further after abundant rains raised prospects of a good harvest and improved sentiments.
In the motorcycle and step-thru category, India's biggest motorcycle maker Hero Honda Motors posted a 19.2 per cent rise to 16.44 lakh units while that of nearest rival, Bajaj Auto, grew 11 per cent to 8.05 lakh units.
Sales of Chennai-based TVS Motor Co, which have slowed down due to low demand for its two-stroke 'Max' range of motorcycles, remained almost flat at 5.66 lakh units during April-January 2003-04.
Yamaha Motor India suffered a 14.6 per cent drop to two lakh units while that of Kanpur-based LML surged 76.8 per cent to 1.46 lakh units.
Sales of Kinetic Engineering fell by a marginal 1.23 per cent to 43,750 units but that of Majestic Auto climbed 213.6 per cent to 7,704 units.
In the scooter and scooterettee category, sales of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India more than doubled to 2.46 lakh units but that of Bajaj Auto slipped 34.4 per cent to 1.87 lakh units.
TVS Motor and Kinetic Engineering posted 21.6 and 17.1 per cent rise to 1.58 lakh and 33,485 units.
Sales of Pune-based automatic scooter maker Kinetic Motor skidded by 9.7 per cent to 75,666 units.
Sales of LML and Majestic Auto also declined by 48 and 55.3 per cent to 30,268 and 3,377 units, respectively.
All the three moped makers -- TVS, Majestic and Kinetic -- registered 2.6, 29.7 and 41 per cent decline to 2.03 lakh, 30,954 and 21,056 units, respectively. Bureau Report
