Kolkata, Mar 03: At least 20 lakh city dwellers were affected as a main water distribution pipeline burst during piling works for a flyover in the southern parts of the city, city mayor Subroto Mukherjee said today. Households in south and parts of central districts of the city were hit by severe water scarcity as supply from the storage tanks had to be stopped for repair works.
The pipeline, which burst late last night, was being repaired by the water supply wing of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation on war footing, Mukherjee said adding that supply to almost 50 per cent of the affected households had already been restored.
"It will take at least a day or two for the situation to normalise," the mayor said.

"I have also called a meeting with the flyover construction company in the evening to discuss the issue so that such incidents do not happen again," he said adding that such breach had occurred once before.
A number of roads were flooded as water gushed out of the burst pipeline.

Massive traffic jams were also reported from south and central parts of the city as the breach occurred on AJC Bose Road, an arterial road connecting the two parts of the metropolis.
