Ludhiana, June 01: Fifty-one women victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots have threatened to self-immolate outside the official residence of the Punjab chief minister in Chandigarh on Tuesday to protest the government's decision to allot houses constructed for riot victims to the general public.
Surjit Singh Dugri, president of the Danga Peerat Society Punjab, told reporters today that 51 women wanted to self-immolate to protest the decision of the Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA).
"Now we had decided to arrange a draw of lots at Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar and whosoever's name is picked will get the opportunity to go ahead with the mission outside the house of Capt Amarinder Singh," he said.
Dugri led a 'jatha' to Amritsar today to pray for the women.
"We have been living in these flats since 1984. We are ready to pay whatever they (the government) wants. It only wants to render us homeless," he said.
