Madrid, Mar 14: Utilising the gaps in the Indian midfield with perfect counter-attacks, Pakistan over-powered India 4-2 to clinch the Bronze medal in the Pre-Qualifying Olympic Hockey Tournament here yesterday.
With this victory, Pakistan have finished third in the 12-nation tournament and India fourth.
This victory was also Pakistan's second over India in the tournament. Earlier in the pool match, Pakistan had beaten India 5-3. With Sohail Abbas scoring only one goal from two penalty corners, Pakistan were served well by their forwards who made the crosses count and didn't lose their nerve in front of the Indian goal.
India, on the other hand, were distinctly unlucky in not converting the field attempts they had. For the record, India enjoyed 54 per cent of the exchanges with Pakistan having 46 per cent.
The scorers for Pakistan were Shabbir Mohammad (15th), Sohail Abbas (44th), Shakeel Abbasi (55th), Kashif Jawad (69th). India scored through Prabhjot Singh (22nd) and Gagan Ajit Singh (59th). With space available in the defence for both the teams, attacks and counter-attacks were there virtually every minute. Both the teams had their chances in the first ten minutes but after settling down, Pakistan were the first to utilise a defensive lapse by India to get their first goal in the 15th minute.
Kashif Jawad had the attack and he gave the ball to an overlapping Nadeem Mohammed who went into the circle and gave the ball to an unmarked Shabbir who only had to extend his stick and deflect in(1-0). Kanwalpreet was late in realizing that Shabbir had been left unmarked and by the time he fell back, the goal had been converted.
Subsequently, India had a penalty corner and Kanwalpreet Singh's direct shot went off Salman Akbar's pads and straight into goal. But the umpire disallowed saying that it was a high ball. The Indians protested but to no avail.
