Meriden, May 10: Barry Lane wins the British Masters by three shots. Britain's Barry Lane ended a 10-year wait for his fifth European Tour title when he won the British Masters by three strokes in his 499th tour event on Sunday (May 9). The 43-year-old former Ryder Cup player's final round six-under-par 66 for a 16-under-par total of 272 left him three shots ahead of Argentine duo Eduardo Romero and Angel Cabrera. A chip-in eagle on the long seventh hole took Lane to the top of the leaderboard and the Englishman, who won the first Accenture Match Play World Championship in 1995, was never headed. Lane could have lost his lead at the par-four 16th after his ball was buried in heavy rough but a magnificent recovery shot produced one of five closing birdies and put him on his way to the 473,000-USD first prize in his 499th tour event.

Lane's victory was all the more remarkable as he was struggling with a knee injury last week, jeopardising his chances of playing in the tournament.
