Chandigarh, Sept 01: Rains lashed many places in Punjab and Himachal today, with Ludhiana registering 85.4 mm.
Mercury plummetted by several degrees in the city recording 31.2 degrees celsius after it rained for most part of the day, the Meteorological Department said 50 mm of rain was recorded in Chandigarh. In Punjab, the mercury dropped by four degrees at Ludhiana to settle at 30.8 degrees celsius after the industrial town was drenched by heavy rains.
Amritsar had a high of 32.2 degrees celsius while the high at Patiala settled at 30.1 degrees celsius after receiving heavy rains at 40 mm. The Nangal Dam area also had a rainfall of 12. Mm.
Shimla received light rains during the day. Rainfall was also reported from Pandoh, Kahu, Sujanpur Tera, Berthin and Guler in Himachal Pradesh.
According to the MeT office, an upper air cyclonic circulation was active over south-west Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining Punjab. Moderate to rather heavy rain has been predicted at many places in Himachal and Punjab while light to moderate rain is likely at a few places in Haryana during the next 48 hours.
