Guwahati, June 06: BJP president M Venkiah Naidu today ridiculed a remark reportedly made by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi that regional parties were not good for states and said coalition governments were the need of the hour. "Sonia Gandhi has now realised that her statement (made during the Congress chief ministers` conclave here last years) was wrong after BJP has gone for successful coalition in smaller states as Nagaland... Commitment and conviction are needed for coalition which Gandhi does not have," Naidu told the NE BJP zonal meet here. "Coalition governments are the need of the hour and that is why our party has gone in for such a system in various states," he said. Naidu said his party had started a massive exercise to correct the "wrong principles" of the earlier Congress regime and Prime Minister A B Vajpayee was the only non-Congress leader to complete five years of stable government. Referring to the insurgency problems in the North East, he said the Centre was ready for negotiations with extremist outfits and parleys are already on with the Bodo and Naga undergrounds. "Peace is the pre-requisite for development and the bullet cannot solve problems," he added. Bureau Report
