Hoshiarpur, July 06: Police have busted an inter-state gang of poppy husk smugglers and recovered 70 bags containing about 2450 kg of poppy husk, a senior police official said here today.

On a specific information about the gang, police laid a check post and the poppy was recovered from two trucks near Mahilpur yesterday, district police chief Gurpreet Deo said. She said that police had launched a special campaign against narcotic smugglers. "In the first truck bearing a Delhi registeration number, Parvesh Kumar of Saharanpur was arrested after he had concealed 40 bags of poppy in special cavities made inside his vehicle," Deo said. In another operation, the police party recovered 30 bags of poppy from a truck bearing a Himachal registeration and arrested Nasim, a resident of Shakti Nagar, Ludhiana. His accomplice Muskan of Saharanpur had also been arrested, she said. The preliminary interrogation of the suspects had revealed that they had been bringing poppy husk in large quantities from Saharanpur and later distributed it to different dealers in places like Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Ludhiana and Moga, she added.
