Mumbai: Among the many places in Mathura – Krishna Janmabhoomi – Kusum Sarovar finds a special mention. This picturesque water tank is a must visit tourist hotspot in this holy town of Mathura.
The water body is over 450 ft long and 60 ft deep. Located near Radha Kunj, the Kusum Sarovar is an ideal location where tourists can virtually revisit the times of Krishna and feel the divine love Gopis nurtured in their hearts for him.
The sarovar is encompassed by a beautiful sandstone monument which is believed to have been built by Jawahir Singh, the king of Bharatpur in 1764 after claiming victory over the Mughal emperor of Delhi.
The Kusum Sarovar (Kusum in Sanskrit means flowers and sarovar meaning lake) derived its name from a variety of flora that enhanced its beauty. One can find a number of plants around the sarovar besides the kadamba trees in abundance (Kadamba flowers are believed to be Krishna’s favourite) even today.
