New Delhi, May 13: Virtually ruling out the possibility of cobbling up a majority and staking claim to form the government, BJP came out today and said that it accepted its defeat humbly. Addressing a press conference at party headquarters BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, the party’s defeat has come as a surprise to them. “We accept peoples` verdict and would "honestly and constructively" carry out the role assigned by the people. BJP-led NDA has been voted out of power to pave the way for the return of the Congress party at the Centre,” said Naqvi. “The NDA rule will be remembered as the golden period in the era of Indian political history. We are proud of the work done by our coalition at the Centre for the past five years,” said Naqvi. “We are not in position of forming government at the Centre seeing the prevailing situation, but we will keep an eye on Opposition’s move in the formation of the government, said Naqvi.
“The issues leading to defeat will be discussed after all the results are out,” he said.
When asked to comment on Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin issue as the electoral verdict has gone in her favour, Naqvi said, “We will discuss the issues for which people have voted her.”
Asked if BJP would oppose Congress president Sonia Gandhi as prime minister, he said, "We ill not oppose peoples` verdict."
Meanwhile, BJP Parliamentary Board would meet tomorrow at 10 am at Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajayee`s residence to discuss the post-poll scenario including the reasons for the poor performance of the party.
He said tomorrow`s meeting would discuss region-wise reasons for the party`s performance including the issues involved.
