Lucknow, June 08: Opposition leaders who held a meeting here today to fine-tune their strategy against the BSP-BJP government decided not to parade the MLAs supporting them before the Governor but to go to the people alleging that "people holding constitutional posts are hell-bent on stymying democracy" by allowing a minority government to function.
Addressing a joint press conference, the opposition leaders said that though the Mayawati-led government has been reduced to a minority after withdrawal of support by the 14-member Rashtriya Lok Dal, the government was continuing with the "blessings of the governor, support of the speaker of the state assembly, and on the directions of the Prime Minister”.
" When people holding constitutional posts were hell bent on stymying democracy, we have no option but to go to the people,” they said.
They reiterated the demand that the Chief Minister Mayawati prove her majority on the floor of the state assembly.

The meeting which lasted for an hour was attended by Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, Rashtriya Kranti Party president Kalyan Singh, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Jagdambika Pal and SP general secretary Amar Singh.
Kalyan Singh said that the governor Vishnu Kant Shastri and the Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha Keshari Nath Tripathi have violated democratic norms by allowing a minority government to function in Uttar Pradesh.
Maintaining that the Mayawati-led government has been reduced to a minority, he said that opposition will not parade its MLAs before the governor.

The onus of proving its majority was on chief minister Mayawati and she should take up the challenge and prove her support on the floor of the house, he said.
