Panaji, June 18: A series of programmes, including taking out of "prabhat pheries", singing of patriotic songs and felicitating freedom fighters marked the Goa revolution day celebrations here today. Fifty-eight freedom fighters were honoured here at a function by governor Mohd Fazal and chief minister manohar Parrikar for their contributions to liberate Goa from the Portuguese colonial rule.
Wreaths were laid by the governor, chief minister and other dignitaries at the martyrs memorial.
Paying homage to the freedom fighters, Fazal appealed to the people to maintain unity and work hard with a missionary zeal to bring glory and prosperity to the state. It was on the same day in 1946 that Dr Ram Manohar Lohia gave a clarion call from Lohia Maidan, Margao, to the people of the state to unite and fight against the Portuguese regime.
The call is considered as the beginning of the revolution that strengthened the freedom movement and reshaped the liberation struggle. Bureau Report
